Last year the call went out that the Lawn and Bake Sale was an all Church Event. Things are different enough this year that we can only hope that people had fun and saw the benefit of the hard work it takes. Bethany will need your effort, bake goods, time, and maybe some moeny again this year to create what is the longest running All Church Fund Raiser.

Tomato Products
Food Pantry- for the month of  August the food for the Montpelier Food Pantry is Tomato Products. Sauce, Paste, Crushed, Puree or Whole.

School Supplies for Barre DCF kids - It is nearly time for the new school year to begin, and all children will be getting ready.  This includes the children involved with DCF.  It is hard for these kids and their foster parents to afford all the needed supplies.  The State of Vermont does not provide any extra funds for these items.  The Bethany Church PINS partnership is once again collecting school supplies to help out.  Please bring items on Sunday, August 24, 2014.  The following list gives ideas for kids at all grade levels:  #2 pencils, pens, erasers, crayons, colored pencils, markers, high lighters, pencil sharpeners, calculators, rulers, compass/ protractor sets, notebooks, notebook paper, dividers, spiral notebooks, report covers, index cards, glue, scissors, paste, tape, book covers, backpacks, lunchboxes, water bottles.  Thank you so much for your help and generosity. Sandy Clougher, Sue Day, and Carol Welch

The 20th Annual Lawn and Bake Sale will be held on September 13 and 14, 2014. This is a fun and rewarding event to support our many ministries and connect with the local community.  Thank you to all who have already signed up to help.  More helpers will be needed Sept. 8 -15 - - As usual, we need folks to SORT & PRICE mornings, afternoons, or evenings, SET UP THE TENT Friday noon 9/12, SETTING UP SATURDAY MORNING at 7am, work as a CASHIER or a DISPLAY & MARKETING associate, help with CLEAN UP Saturday at 4, Sunday at 3, and Monday at 9.  Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board in the hall with many types of positions available. Yes, we will need good bags - but we already have plenty of hangers.  Boxes will also be needed again - last year's sources for intact boxes (not broken down) seemed good. DONATIONS of clean items in good working order are welcome 9/9 - 9/11 8am - 8pm, also Monday 9/8 1 - 8pm.  We cannot take donations on Friday 9/12. Flyers with all the details are available in the Narthex. This is a perfect way to give back to Bethany and get to know each other better - It's fun and uplifting - and only 4 weeks away - - JOIN US!!

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? At this time of year gardens are beginning to produce  summer squash, zucchini, green beans, and cucumbers.  Do you have an excess? If so, we would love to have them at the Bethany Bowl. You can bring your offerings into the church office daily from 9-12 noon or to the Bowl on Tuesday.  We love to invent dishes so can use just about anything. Thanks in advance.

BETHANY BOWL, AUGUST 5, 2014, FED: 105  HEAD COOK: Phyllis Rowell SOUP FROM NECI: Tom Lever DISHWASHERS: Conrad Rowell and Erik Norkeveck HELPERS: Grace Tarrant, Brittany, a student, and her teacher,  James Hamel (from the New School), Tina Campbell (new volunteer), John Hnylka, Chris Terry, Anne DeVaughn, Pete Gomez.  The menu was sweet potato corn chowder from NECI (pretty spicy, Mark P. liked it), macaroni with meat sauce, ratatouille (thanks to summer squash from Theresa Lever and zucchini from Tina Campbell), green and wax beans from the Halls, fresh sliced cucumbers from the Halls, assorted desserts and beverages. Keep those vegetables coming.  They are greatly appreciated and oh so good. Oops, I forgot. A half egg salad sandwich from the Hall's chickens.

She left more than an empty pew.

Chris Jackman, remembered by many for her dedication to Bethany's programs, especially those for
children, was an integral part of Bethany Church. She pledged both her time and money, and we miss her very much. The church has recently learned that Chris remembered Bethany generously in her will, although we won’t know the amount for several months.  Through her gift, Chris’ presence will remain with Bethany in the years to come.  We are grateful and humbled. The Board of Directors is making plans for the congregation to offer input on the best uses of this gift, so look for those opportunities.

New Team Ministry!

At our Annual Meeting, we voted to try a new governance structure that includes team ministries.  Now we need to form the teams!  On the bulletin board outside the parlor, there are sign ups for teams - please take a look and sign up for a team that interests you!  Everyone's participation is needed.  If you have an idea for a team that isn't there, talk to Amy or Mark about the possibility!

Art Exhibit:
Holiness and the Feminine Spirit: The Art of Janet McKenzie.  August 1-31, 2014 (with Artist's Talk & Reception on August 2).  Location:  Waitsfield United Church of Christ, Waitsfield, VT.    Click HERE (http://www.vtcucc.org/docs/e-event/eventdocs/JMcKenzie2.pdf) for a flyer.

Gleaning Volunteers Needed

The Vermont Foodbank currently has a high need for volunteers to come out and assist in harvesting local produce for area food shelves and agencies. Specifically, they are focusing on the Hardwick, Stowe and Morrisville areas. Gleaning is the act of harvesting and gathering excess produce or "seconds" from farms. The produce we harvest is often top quality. Other times, the produce might have small blemishes or an irregular shape. This type of food rescue enables the Foodbank to provide delicious, healthy food to its customers who might not otherwise have access to local produce.

Click here (http://www.vtfoodbank.org/OurPrograms/FreshFoodInitiatives/GleaningProgram.aspx) for more information or contact:  Andrea Solazzo, Gleaning and Community Outreach Coordinator: asolazzo@vtfoodbank.org / (802) 472-8280.
