Bethany Dialogue

February 2014

The UCC New England Women's Celebration IX

This grand event is being held in Portland, ME March 28 – 30th! The theme of the event is “Together We Can!” This is a wonderful opportunity for UCC women to get together and sharing faith and fun! It would be great to get a group together to go from Bethany! For details, check out the event website at www.uccwomenscelebration.org and let Amy Pitton know if you would like to attend!

Visioning Update:

The Trustees have been looking at the proposed new governance model and asked Bethany’s boards and committees for feedback on this work-in-progress.  With that information in hand, the Visioning Team will now address some of the specific and practical issues that have arisen, such as handling finances for teams and how to evaluate our work.  Next, we will be planning informational meetings specifically for the congregation, in order to familiarize ourselves with the proposed changes before the Annual Meeting.  Your involvement is welcome, so contact Patty Turley if you have any questions or comments. pturley@zclpc.com  223-5488

Supper Good Samaritan Haven

I am always proud and pleased to deliver the evening meal, provided by the folks from Bethany, to the Good Samaritan Haven. The people there are so happy to receive a Bethany meal and the person working there tonight told me that everyone loves it when I bring food from Bethany because it’s always so good and there’s always enough. What a lovely thing to feel so welcomed and to be able to help provide comfort and love to those in need. Speaking of love---February is the month of love and Jesus asks us to love kindness. Let us show both love and kindness by sending another delicious dinner to the shelter on February 23rd. The sign-up sheet is available on Sundays, after worship, in the Parlor and during the week on the Outreach bulletin board. Baking pans, provided by Bethany Bowl, are available so you don’t need to send your own pans or purchase disposable ones-just ask.
Thanks to the Outreach Board for choosing to donate the proceeds of their “Souper Bowl” collection to the Good Samaritan Haven meals. Their support is greatly appreciated! And once again, heart-felt thanks to everyone who contributes to these wonderful dinners. Please know that your support of this ministry is what makes it possible!

A little Help Please

On Feb 8th-(Sat.) @ 8:00 am The Property Board will gather to sweep, wash and wax the floor in Fellowship Hall. They would appreciate the help of three or four more people in this endeavor. If 8:00 am is too early, nine or ten is not too late as those who have been here will need a break. This effort will take about 3 or 4 hours depending on the number of helpers. Please call Gary Rogers @ 229-9893 if you can help.

Adult CE:

Reverend Mark will lead a discussion group that deepens your knowledge of what scripture and history tell us about Holy Week, based on the book “The Last Week.”  Sessions will be in Lent for 1.5 hours or less, and the exact dates will be announced soon.   The CE Board is also interested in hosting other adult-education offerings.  If you have general or specific ideas, please tell a CE Board member or Mark Pitton!

From the Finance Committee

In the first half of this fiscal year, Bethany made strong progress toward meeting the FY14 financial goals in support of our operating ministries. As we enter the second half of the fiscal year, we encourage you to continue your financial support, and ask that you consider increasing the amount of your giving. The financial plan approved by the congregation last September included a gap between identified income and planned expenses. Our boards and committees are doing all they can to minimize expenses while keeping our community of faith relevant and visible in the community. While new outreach and fundraising initiatives are currently in development, your ongoing support through pledges and other donations is vital for our financial stability.
Thank you!

We’ll hear that chant many times as the auctioneers from Jenkins Auction Service take us through the various donations to benefit the church’s activities.
How about another preview?

Who do you know who collects vintage postcards?
How will you help?
  1. Plan to make a donation.

Everyone Welcome

Last April at our all-church visioning meetings there was consensus that Bethany is
called to Be Present, Be Relevant, and Be Visible in the Community. And this year our boards, committees and staff have taken those ideas to heart.
For example, over the past several months the Trustees have grappled with how to make our sanctuary space more welcoming and accessible for everyone. The rigid design of our pews makes it difficult for families with very young children and those who use scooters or wheelchairs to comfortably enter and participate in worship. As a first step in addressing this, at our February meeting we voted to remove (for storage) three pews from the back of the sanctuary. Removal of one pew on the parking lot side will allow easier access to the elevator entrance. And, two fewer pews on the Main Street side will give us space to create flexible seating for families with very young children.
In the coming months the Trustees will consult with experts about other changes we might make so that those in wheelchairs and scooters can both enter the sanctuary and find comfortable seating locations.
These changes in the sanctuary might initially feel uncomfortable to those of us who like the pews they way they are now. And they might mean that some of us will need to adjust to sitting a row or two farther forward than we are used to. I am truly sorry for any discomfort this change might cause. I am, however, convinced that if Bethany wants to thrive – to be Present, Relevant and Visible in the Community - we have to be responsive to the changing needs of those who might want to explore participation in our generous, adventurous faith community.
This small change is another step in our journey of living into new ways of being Bethany.
Peace and Blessings,
Stephanie Ratmeyer
